Great Time New Apiarists

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

I met some new apiarists today from Birch-Hill Organics, Great people providing a fantastic product.  We went through three colonies to ascertian the condition and viability of the colonies.  We found them to be in very good health, but needing some room to produce some honey.  It seems that the bees found a flow of nectar in the area and are bringing in something.  It may bee some of the great lemon blossoms that are still on the lemon trees in one section of the orchard.  I was very surprised to see the trees still blooming at this time of the year.  Its nice to learn something new.

We should be supering a colony within the week and adding a tbh to apiary soon. We hope to have a few photos and Honey next week.

From Mush and Crush to Sweet and Neat

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Two days ago we crushed it, then we let it gravity strain for a day. Today we put it into some jars and now we have more avocado sweet dark thick avocado honey. One bar that wasn’t even full produced almost a gallon of honey.

Crush &Strain

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Pulled a bar of Avocado Honey today, crushed it into a 600 micron strainer. After the honey is gravity fed through this strainer I will pass it through a 400 micron strainer. Then I will pour the honey into some small jars and let the sun melt the beeswax for use by some local artisens. The honey is never heated or cooked, only pure un medicated honey and wax from MBB.

Apiary Check

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

It was a perfect day for an apiary check, warm about 70 degrees, sunny, and very light winds. We checked about eight hives today and found honey and happy bees in them all. We pulled another bar of avocado honey from one tbh and found lots of uncapped light honey in most of the other hives. We think the avocado flow is coming to an end. Julia and I are going to try and find out what is flowing now, it may be melons or cucumbers that are planted nearby. Will have a few more bars to remove maybe next week, maybe the week after. All in all a great day to work with the bees.
